A fatbike has won the third stage of the Gaes Titan Desert by Garmin, which was second part of the marathon stage.
The protagonist has been Ignacio Ariel Gili. The Argentine, who finished in second position in 2016 and in third position in 2017 has achieved his first victory in the Moroccan desert. After two mountainous stages, today cyclists have covered large straights of sandy and rocky tracks. The third stage has also been the second part of the marathon.
After some attacks with no transcendence in the stage Ignacio Ariel Gili and Josep Betalú have started the winning attack. Both riders have pushed hard and their strong rhythm could not be neutralized by the persecuting group. In this way, at the 70 kilometer they had an advantage of 45 seconds and only 10 kilometers later they doubled the gap over the group of Guillem Muñoz, Moisés Dueñas, Toni Bou, Julen Zubero, Sebastián Tamayo, Oriol Colomé, Manuel El Triki Beltrán and Ramón Sagués.
In the 110 kilometer, Josep Betalú, aware of his possibilities to increase his advantage in the general leaderboard pushed hard, and his effort had a good result because the final advantage has been of 5’32’’. Josep Betalú has not fought for the victory and Ignacio Chili has made history in the hardest MTB race in the world.
In female category the stage was similar to the yesterday’s one. Ramona Gabriel began as the first woman and Anna Ramírez remained behind the group. But after a great team effort alongside Melcior Mauri, they have reached Gabrie. From there they have shared a group until the end. In the finish line Ramírez has reversed the yesteday’s result and added his first victory in this 2018.
Ignacio Ariel Gili: "Last year I had a serious accident in Spain in which I broke the tag and I ‘ve been out of the competition for some time. I have been out from home during 3 months preparing this race and it has been a constant struggle to come here, so I am very happy for this victory. I want to dedicate it to my children, who are very special to me. Also to my wife and my whole family who love me very much and follow me everywhere. I come with a fatbike due to las year’s injury. I can’t run much and at the last moment I decided to come with a fatbike to avoid walking in the dunes, although it requires a harder training ".
Anna Ramírez: "It has been difficult, but finally we have achieved a stage victory in this Titan. I'm feeling better every day. At the start I had problems to find my rhythm but then, thanks to my teammate I found my pace, I caught other girls and I reached Ramona, with whom I reached the finish line. We got together after the EH2, halfway through the race, and for the moment it was going well. We have recovered more than 3 minutes from the EH2. I face this second part of the race with enthusiasm, I've found myself quite well, I'm reading the terrain quite well and see if I find the right track in the dunes"
