Lamdouare (29-04-2015). Primaflor-Orbea rider Fran Pérez (3:56:48) won the third stage of the Titan Desert by Garmin. Today was the start of the marathon stage over 113 km between Toughach and Lamdouare where the riders are denied of any type of external mechanical or physiotherapeutic support.
The Titan Desert by Garmin began one of its most special stages today. The marathon started out over very mountainous terrain and has been decisive in establishing the different starting positions. The race got moving right from the beginning with an attack from Óscar Pereiro, one of the most active Titans, who is persistently in search of partial victory. He was third over the line for the second consecutive day today and continues moving up in the overall classifications.
The main favourites set a strong pace in this stage full of varied and spectacular landscapes and the wide variety among the titans saw the main group split in a dozen or so small groups. After several attempts, and overcoming the first stretch in the high mountain, Fran Pérez and Guillem Muñoz (Tomàs Bellés W2W) were able to take the reins and they didn’t look back.
40 km after escaping from the main bunch, Fran Pérez proved to be the strongest and broke away from Muñoz 150 metres from the finish to celebrate a much sought after victory.
“I came here looking to win a stage in the Titan 3 years ago. Last year I came close on three occasions but was always caught a few kilometres from the finish but today I’ve done it”, stated Pérez with a big smile on his face.
From behind, the big favourites are still in the running. In this third stage, where the fatigue of the two previous stages is beginning to be felt, José Silva managed to hold on to the lead and crossed the line today together with Diego Tamayo, who is just one second behind him. The race is still wide open as we arrive to the half-way point of the competition.
Today, Mayalen Noriega won the women’s category and broke the strong hold of Anna Ramírez who had claimed victory over the two previous stages. A double victory for Primaflor-Orbea, after its golden day in the Titan Desert by Garmin.
A new and extremely hard stage for the remaining 550 riders in the competition, together with the additional hardship of sleeping in the communal haima, and having to carry all their equipment for the next stage tomorrow.
The adventure of the marathon stage that forces the titans to give that something extra facing the extreme harshness. Tomorrow’s stage 4 between Lamdouare and Erg Znaigui takes us to the desert and spectacular dunes await over a total of 98 km.
