Israel Núñez got the win in the fourth edition of the Nissan Titan Desert held in May 2009. Following the introduction of the news of 2010, This catalan runner answered our questions about his experience and his expectations for the race in 2010
What was your experience with the Nissan Titan Desert?
The most surprising thing was that it's a race entirely unlike anything we are use to race. We usually run between ribbons, and in the desert you find large tracts unmarked. So many factors influencing: the Roadbook and your skills in guidance or GPS if you are carrying, etc... Also items such as the marathon stage in wich you need to get with you all the necessary things to sleep. first time, you're a little bit surprised but now, after the experience of 2009, I know what it's necessary and what is important.
If you had to define one key to succeed in the NTD, which would you choose?
The key is to go always in the right direction, it's essential to have guidance or train in reading the road book. You have to know always kept a round into the chamber. The stages are very long and had time to recovery is essential. Learn to rest and recover strength is essential to succeed. At camp we must reserve the largest possible number of hours to rest. We must also get lucky and find some faults prevent because a mechanical problem can nominate you out of the race, last year there were people who pricked up 6 times in a row and it was probably caused by a bad repair of one of the punctures.
It's a hard race but do you think is an impossible race?
The pace is important, there is a closing time of control but is a huge time and leave options to all participants. Everyone can get to goal. You must control and maintain the rhythm, a bad rhythm in these circumstances is what hurts ... is like a bullet is not the bullet what hurts but the speed. With the pace that imposes on you something similar happens, you have to know where and how you can respond in every race situation. The race is completely cycled and can be done with a preparation thoroughly.
What is your aim for 2010 with the number 1 on your bike?
Well, in the official launch of the 2010 edition was explained that the race will be much more complete, even with a time trial. I wish I could make mixed team, return to the desert and enjoy more than last year and share it with someone special in a special way and rediscover all the friends I made last year.
